The Simpsons. Usually the only thing on TV worth watching. But is it's success fuelled by Mail Art? No. But, I've recently noticed mailart references in the show! Not too surprising coz they're obviously pretty cool folk, and there are always obscure references. They clearly have a huge crew of writers, and it seems that a mail artist has infiltrated this team. The evidence? Hardly!
Well, as you can see the evidence is hardly conclusive as yet. I'll keep an eye out for more examples. Also, if you spot any mailart references in The Simpsons (or any other TV show for that matter!), please email me and I'll add them to the list!
- An episode in which Homer inadvertantly becomes an outsider artist (and Jasper Johns steals things!), someone says something about artists becoming less popular 'except for Ray Johnson, who is more popular than ever', or words to that effect...I'll pay more attention if I see it again!
An episode where Bart is on a boat full of old people. He is looking through a telescope. Lisa suddenly appears in his view, giving him a fright. "Sea Head!" he exclaims, in a blatent reference to the Sea Heads project; The Sea Head is a primitive icon. The Sea Heads in Elemental Locations Scheme is a international art extravaganza for the Millenium devised by Tony 'Doc' Shiels. The aim is to create genuine works of raw magic...
Actually, someone (I forget who, sorry!) pointed out to me that he actually says 'Sea Hag', referring to the 'Popeye' character... oh well, so much for my theory!
